What the ABF and Hovis merger means for UK manufacturing talent

Associated British Foods has completed its acquisition of Hovis Group from Endless LLP, combining it immediately with Allied Bakeries to form a new business called Hovis Bakeries. The brand line is Nourishing the Nation, and the ambition behind it is clear. Build a sustainably profitable UK bakery business with a stronger market position for the long term.

This is not a quiet merger. ABF has been open about the scale of change ahead. Integration will begin shortly, with substantial operational synergies expected across production and distribution. That means restructuring, investment in brands and product innovation, and a business built to compete in growing categories including healthy options.

Chief Executive George Weston has been clear that the plan depends on people. He spoke about combining expertise, scale and capability with targeted investment, and about securing high quality jobs as part of that transition. Sarah Arrowsmith, Chief Executive of Hovis Bakeries, described the ambition to revitalise brands through innovation and to strengthen the business as the industry’s leading route to market through its direct to store network.

Why this matters for engineering recruitment

Whenever two manufacturing operations combine at this scale, the pressure lands squarely on engineering and operations teams. Production lines need to be harmonised. Maintenance strategies need aligning across sites. Reliability and efficiency become the metrics that define whether the merger delivers on its promise.

That creates real demand for specific skill sets, including:

Multi Skilled Engineers who can move fluidly between mechanical and electrical work to keep lines running with minimal downtime.

Maintenance Engineers and Reliability Engineers who bring structured approaches like TPM and RCM to reduce breakdowns and extend asset life.

Process Engineers who understand how to standardise operations across newly combined sites without losing product quality.

Continuous Improvement specialists who can apply lean methodology to strip out waste as two businesses become one.

Engineering Managers and Site Leaders who can hold a team together through the uncertainty that always comes with integration.

The hidden market problem

Here is the challenge most manufacturers face during a period like this. The engineers who are genuinely capable of leading through integration and change are rarely active jobseekers. They are busy doing the job well where they already are. They do not respond to job board adverts, and they are unlikely to be found through a quick contingency search.

This is exactly why headhunting exists. At Tiro Associates, we go beyond the applicant pool and approach passive candidates directly, using our specialist knowledge of the engineering and manufacturing sector to identify people who are the right technical and cultural fit, even when they are not actively looking.

Solutions driven
recruitment

In today’s market, finding the right talent requires more than just posting a job advert. Scarcity of specialised skills and competition for top talent means recruitment has become increasingly complex. Tiro thrives in this space, using tailored recruitment strategies to connect businesses with the hard-to-find individuals who make a real difference.

We offer results without compromise by combining deep industry knowledge with access to “passive” candidates i.e. people not actively looking for a career change. People that are good at what they do, tend to be happy in their roles, and it is these high calibre individuals that could be perfect fit for your company. Partnering with Tiro gives you best-in-industry talent reach and confidence that every hire is the right one. The result? A recruitment process that saves time, reduces risk, and ensures the best people are placed at the heart of your company’s future.

Finding your hiring process is limiting candidate quality? Talk to Tiro today to find a solution to deliver the talent your business needs.
