WEC Race Engineer Jobs for 2027. Small team. Every person counts.

How race engineers from LMH, LMDh, LMP2, F1, F2 and Formula E move into the World Endurance Championship and what Tiro looks for when we build the team that will stand on the 2027 podium.

By Scarlett Warner, Tiro Associates·Published 20 October 2026·Approx 12 min read

For many engineers the World Endurance Championship is the first love. For others it is where a long career in F1 or Formula E finally finds its home, in a team small enough that every single person matters. The season is drawing to a close and the market for 2027 is open, so WEC race engineer jobs are being decided now. This is what we look for, why it is worth talking to us and how we shape the move that gets you there.

1 · Why Race Engineers Move to the World Endurance Championship

Where every person counts

Ask race engineers where they first fell for the sport and a surprising number will say endurance racing. For many it is the entry point, the place where a first trackside seat teaches you what a car really does over six hours or twenty four. For a growing number it is also where a career comes to rest. Like drivers, we see F1 race engineers who want to finish their careers in WEC. We also see Formula E and F2 engineers who treat it as the next step up in scope.

The reason is the team. A WEC crew is small and compact and nobody hides in it. Every person counts and every decision has a name on it. The challenge is the purest version of the job: maximise performance and balance the car and its drivers right on the edge of reliability, for hours, through traffic, through the night and sometimes through the rain. Engineers who thrive here say the same thing. They know exactly what they contributed to the result.

2 · WEC Engineer Jobs and the 2027 Hiring Window

The market is open

The season end is approaching and the market is open. Teams are building the 2027 podium winning squads now. New programmes are arriving and others are winding down. Experienced engineers are in motion and the best seats are being filled through conversations rather than adverts.

For Tiro this is one of the busiest times of the year. The pressure is on to have team members in place for 2027 testing and test dates do not move to suit notice periods or garden leave. Work backwards from the first day on track and the window for a considered move is shorter than it looks. A conversation in October gives you options. A conversation in January gives you a deadline.

3 · What WEC Teams Look for in a Race Engineer

Three things, judged together

We are not matching a job title. We are building compact teams in which every seat has to carry weight. So we look at three things together: the technical substance behind your work, the experience that proves it under race conditions and the DNA that tells us how you behave when the car is on the edge.

The short version

The technical part. Deep, specific craft in vehicle dynamics, performance, energy and reliability.

The experience. A track record of real decisions on a race weekend, from LMH, LMDh, LMP2, F1, F2 or Formula E.

The DNA. Ownership, calm under pressure and a genuine team instinct.

Strong candidates are strong in all three. The sections below explain what each one means in practice.

4 · Technical Skills for WEC Race Engineers

What sits behind the seat

WEC is a technical series first. These are the capabilities we look for most often, whatever the job title says.

Vehicle dynamics and setup across several drivers

One car and a group of drivers with different preferences. The skill is finding the setup window that works for all of them and explaining the trade clearly.

Tyre and energy management

Stint length, degradation, hybrid deployment and energy use decide endurance races as often as outright pace. Engineers from Formula E and F1 will recognise the mindset immediately.

Hybrid and electrical systems

LMH and LMDh cars are hybrids. Engineers who understand deployment, control strategy and battery behaviour are scarce and increasingly valuable.

Performance engineering and data

Turning a flood of telemetry into one clear decision in the pit lane. The best engineers decide quickly and can say why.

Reliability thinking

Running right on the edge means knowing exactly where the edge is. We look for people who understand failure modes and margins and who can protect a result that is five hours old.

Race strategy and simulation

Race simulation, safety car and full course yellow scenarios, pit stop timing and traffic. Fluency in Python or MATLAB is common. Machine learning and automation skills are fast becoming a differentiator.

Working inside Balance of Performance

The regulations set the ceiling. The gain comes from execution, preparation and the small decisions nobody else sees.

5 · Experience for WEC Jobs: LMH, LMDh, LMP2, F1, F2 and Formula E

Where the best engineers come from

You do not need WEC experience to start a conversation. You do need proof that you have been trusted with real decisions on a race weekend. These are the backgrounds we see succeed.

LMH and LMDh Hypercar engineers

The closest match. Current hybrid prototype experience, long race rhythm and familiarity with working inside Balance of Performance.

LMP2 engineers

The nearest cousin. Multi driver cars, small crews, high lap counts and the habit of getting everything done with very few people.

F1 race engineers moving to WEC

Depth of process and data and a level of rigour few other series can teach. Many of these engineers want a smaller team, wider scope and a direct line to the result.

F2 engineers

Single spec racing, relentless calendars and genuine experience of developing a driver. Often the strongest early career signal we see.

Formula E engineers

Energy management, fast preparation and a deep understanding of electrified powertrains. A natural fit for modern hybrid prototypes.

GT3 and IMSA programmes feed the same pool and we welcome them too. Across every background we look for the same things. A full season or more trackside. Ownership of a car or a system rather than supporting someone else’s decision. Direct work with drivers. Evidence of results you contributed to. The range runs from early career engineers with strong data foundations through to lead and head of roles.

6 · The Personal Qualities of a Successful WEC Engineer

How you behave on the edge

Skills get you the interview. DNA decides whether a compact team keeps you. This is what we listen for in every conversation.

Ownership

In a small team nothing falls between the cracks because there are no cracks. You put your hand up and you finish what you start.

Calm under pressure

Hour five, a safety car, a strategy call that is yours to make. We look for people who get quieter and clearer as the pressure rises.

Humility with ambition

You learn from drivers, mechanics and rivals. The ego stays outside the garage and the standards stay high inside it.

Curiosity

You ask why the car did that and you keep asking until you can prove it.

Team instinct

Every person counts means every person helps. You share the data and you share the credit.

Resilience

The calendar crosses continents and the hours are long. The people who last love the work as much as the result.

These sit alongside Tiro’s own DNA, which is human, expertise, integrity and collaborative. It is why we care as much about how you work as what you know.

7 · Why Talk to a Motorsport Recruiter Before You Apply

You do not have to be looking

Most of the best seats are never advertised

Teams build their line ups through conversations and many seats are filled before a vacancy exists. We map the grid so we know who is building what, who is leading it and what the culture is really like once the garage doors close.

The engineers we approach are not looking

That is the point. You can be happy in your seat and still want to know what the next great move could be. A conversation with us does not mean you are leaving.

It is confidential

Nothing about you goes to anyone without your say so. In a paddock this small that is the whole basis of the relationship.

We work with our clients, not their competitors

Once a team engages us we do not run the same brief for a rival, so what we bring you is genuine and early.

We profile what moves you

Career, family, location, ambition and notice period. The right move fits the whole person, not just the CV.

8 · How Tiro Manages Your WEC Career Move

From first conversation to first test day

This is a career fit, not a spec fit. Here is how it works in practice.

1. A confidential career conversation

No vacancy is needed and no commitment is made. We listen first.

2. We build the full picture

What you love, what you want next and what is still good where you are. Sometimes the honest answer is to stay.

3. We map options by fit, not by badge

Team culture, the scope of the seat, the stability of the programme, the car, the people you would work with and where you would live.

4. We introduce you properly

With context, preparation and honest feedback in both directions so every conversation starts from a strong position.

5. We manage the offer and the notice

Package, relocation, travel, role scope and the start date, planned backwards from the first test day. Notice periods and garden leave are handled from the first conversation, not discovered at the end.

6. We stay with you

From the first day to the first podium and beyond. A career is built over many moves and we plan for the next one as well as this one.

We manage every step from first contact to first day. We do not rely on hope.

9 · WEC Engineer Career Move FAQ

How the process actually works

These are the questions we hear most, drawn from the process we run across our F1 work and applied to endurance racing.

Who will I speak to at Tiro?

Scarlett Warner is our first point of contact for WEC and F1 engineers. She started at Tiro as an apprentice and now leads motorsport careers conversations. You deal with her directly from first call to first day.

Do I need to be actively looking to talk to you?

No. Most of the engineers we speak to are not looking. They are busy and often happy. A conversation is a way to understand your options before you need them.

Is everything confidential?

Yes. Your name, your CV and the fact that we have spoken stay with us until you give explicit permission. We never put you forward to a team without your agreement. In a paddock this small that is not a courtesy. It is the basis of the whole relationship.

What happens in a first conversation?

An informal call or video chat about where you are now, what you enjoy, what you want next and what would have to be true for you to consider a move. We share honestly what we are seeing in the market. You do not need a polished CV to start and nothing is committed.

Do I need WEC experience?

No. Engineers from F1, F2, Formula E, LMP2 and GT programmes move into WEC regularly. We look at what you have owned and decided on a race weekend, not the badge on the car.

Is moving from F1 to WEC a step down?

Not in the way people expect. WEC teams are smaller so the scope of a seat is often wider, with more systems, more decisions and more direct contact with drivers and leadership. We judge the scope of the role and the stability of the programme, not just the title. If a role is not a genuine step forward for you we will tell you.

How long does a process take at this time of year?

Shorter than most people expect. Teams building for 2027 testing are working to fixed dates so interviews and offers move quickly once a conversation starts. We prepare you before anything begins so you are never rushed into a decision you are not ready for.

What about notice periods and garden leave?

In motorsport they can run to several months. That is why we plan backwards from the date a team needs you and raise it in the first conversation rather than at offer stage. Getting this right early is often what makes a start for testing possible.

What do you tell the team about me?

Only what you have agreed. We introduce you with context, why you, what you have done and what you want, so the conversation starts from a strong position. You see the same information we share.

What does the offer stage involve?

Role scope, package, relocation support, travel, the testing schedule and the start date. We manage the negotiation so you are not negotiating directly with your future team leader. We also make sure the whole package fits the whole person.

Will I have to relocate?

WEC teams are spread across several countries and some seats are built around a base. We discuss location, relocation support and family early so there are no surprises later.

What if the right answer is to stay where I am?

Then we say so. Some of the best conversations end with clarity that your current seat is the right one. That is a good outcome and we will still be here when things change.
