The Italian Grand Prix Was Won on Energy Management, Not Just Pace

Our preview said Monza would put aerodynamics, chassis and power unit design through the sharpest technical exam of the season. The race delivered that and then added a variable nobody had fully priced in, a car’s own driver now has to manage its battery lap by lap, corner by corner, in real time and the team that wins is the one whose chassis, power unit, strategy and software people built him a car he could actually do that with. Kimi Antonelli won from nineteenth on the grid. The more interesting question is what had to go right across an entire organisation for that recovery to be possible at all. One thing for sure each team is going punch for punch on the track.
1. What actually happened
Kimi Antonelli won the Italian Grand Prix from nineteenth on the grid, a grid penalty for a fresh power unit that Mercedes took into the weekend by choice rather than misfortune. He became the first Italian driver to win at Monza since 1966, in front of his own home crowd. The race itself was red flagged before the end of lap two after Charles Leclerc forced Lewis Hamilton wide at the first chicane and then crashed out of his own race at the Parabolica, ending Ferrari’s home weekend before it had properly started. From the standing restart, George Russell led from Pierre Gasly, who had taken Alpine’s first ever pole position and Franco Colapinto. Antonelli worked his way through the field, was up to sixth within a handful of laps and took the net lead from Russell on lap eighteen. The race was finally settled on lap fifty of fifty three, when Antonelli caught his own teammate on fresher tyres and completed the move that mattered. Max Verstappen completed the podium in third, his fifth of the season. 2. The gamble behind the grid penalty
Taking a grid penalty on purpose only makes sense if overtaking has actually become easier. 2026 has changed that calculation directly. Overtake Mode, this year’s replacement for the old drag reduction system, gives a chasing car extra electrical deployment for a full lap rather than a fixed detection zone and it can be spread across a lap or spent all at once depending on the situation. That is a genuinely different overtaking problem to defend against than a wing that flattens for eight hundred metres and it is the mechanism that made a recovery drive from nineteenth a realistic bet rather than a wasted Sunday. Mercedes’ willingness to take the penalty at Monza specifically, a circuit with the longest flat out sections on the calendar and therefore the most Overtake Mode opportunities per lap, was a calculated read of exactly this dynamic, not a shrug at bad luck.
3. The part every driver had to manage themselves
The 2026 power unit rules removed the MGU-H entirely, which means the MGU-K now harvests energy from braking alone, up to 8.5 megajoules a lap under normal conditions with a further 0.5 megajoules available through Overtake Mode. Monza’s problem is that its straights are long enough to spend a full battery before the car ever reaches a braking zone, producing a visible, unmistakable loss of acceleration mid straight that has nothing to do with a mechanical fault and everything to do with a driver who deployed too early. Teams and drivers who get this wrong pay for it twice, once in outright lap time and once again if it leaves them exposed to Overtake Mode from a car behind with more energy still in reserve. Ferrari brought a specific hybrid mapping update tied to its second power unit upgrade of the season for exactly this problem, an attempt to solve lap by lap deployment in software rather than leaving the entire judgement call to the driver. Whether that update actually helped is hard to separate from a Ferrari weekend that fell apart in the opening two laps for reasons that had nothing to do with energy strategy at all.
4. The strategy call that decided the podium order
Lance Stroll’s retirement brought out a virtual safety car in the second half of the race. How each team responded to it explains the final margin between the two Mercedes. Antonelli pitted under the virtual safety car for a fresh set of tyres. Russell did not, choosing to defend track position on a tyre that was already well into its life. That decision looked reasonable in the moment and cost him the win three laps from the end, when a driver with a genuine pace advantage on newer rubber is exactly the situation Overtake Mode was built to reward. It is a clean example of a call that belongs to race engineering and vehicle dynamics as much as to the pit wall, reading tyre life, track position value and a rival’s energy state as one problem rather than three separate ones.
5. The skills question this race actually asks
None of the last four sections describe a problem that belongs to a single department. A power unit deployment strategy is worthless without the software to model it before a driver ever turns a wheel, a strategy call under a virtual safety car is only as good as the tyre and energy data feeding it in real time and a penalty gamble like Mercedes’ only pays off if the car underneath it can actually execute a recovery drive once the bet is placed. McLaren’s own team principal has been open about exactly this kind of gap this season, describing the team as behind on the simulation models needed to pre programme a power unit’s deployment before a car’s own onboard learning takes over at the circuit, a software and modelling shortfall with a direct, visible cost in race trim.
Aston Martin, Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari have each built out a distinct AI and simulation capability this year, spanning aerodynamic pattern recognition in CFD data, trackside strategy agents and power unit deployment modelling. The teams pulling ahead are not the ones with the single best specialist in any one of these areas. They are the ones whose chassis, aero, power unit, performance and software people are actually building the same car together, in something close to real time, rather than handing work down a chain from one department to the next. That is a harder problem to hire for than any single named role and it is the honest shape of the skills gap this race actually exposed.
6. The rest of the grid, in brief
Ferrari’s home weekend was undone before the energy strategy question even mattered, a first lap clash between its own two drivers followed by a retirement that turned a potential result into damage limitation. McLaren’s quiet fourth for Norris keeps the championship gap in check but does not answer the deployment modelling question raised above. Red Bull’s podium was built on Verstappen’s usual race craft rather than a fixed technical answer and the team’s wider development direction remains an open question following the pointed criticism it has faced internally this year. Alpine’s first pole position, delivered by Pierre Gasly, is the standout form story of the weekend even though the race result did not match it, a sign that the car’s single lap pace has moved to a genuinely different level. Racing Bulls and Williams picked up points in the lower half of the top ten, a solid if unspectacular return for both.
This one is not a list of named roles with experience bands attached, because the honest answer this race gives is not that simple. Monza asked five disciplines to work as one system at the same time, power unit and ERS deployment modelling, chassis and braking system design, aerodynamics, performance and race strategy and the AI and software capability that increasingly sits underneath all four of the others.
The teams that struggled this weekend did not lack a specialist. They lacked the connective tissue between specialists, the kind of engineer who can sit at the seam between two of these disciplines and make sure the model, the strategy and the driver are all working from the same picture of the car. That is a genuinely different hiring problem to solve and it is the one worth having an honest conversation about.
