As Motor Project Engineer you will be part of a world-class team responsible for delivering 10 million high-performance brushless motor-drive units per year for automotive electric steering. The company is one of the world’s largest producers of electric steering systems supplying a wide range of vehicle manufacturers including VW, Ford, GM, Mercedes, Peugeot, Renault and Fiat. The motor-drive for these products is designed in the company’s prestigious technical centre iin the West Midlands, with over 40 years of high tech R&D combining the best aspects of university research and industry.

The design of electric steering systems is extremely challenging requiring safety-critical servo-drive performance at automotive costs. The company leads the field in many areas of design and research, and employs cutting-edge motor design technologies such as segmented stator assemblies, sensor less control and advanced noise reduction.

This is a very fast-paced sector requiring advanced product-design and problem-solving skills for programmes with short design cycle times and high production volumes. The role involves motor application design and the management of internal/external motor suppliers to deliver motors to demanding safety and quality standards.

What you’ll do
Support the mechanical and electric design of high-performance safety-critical motors
Manage external and company in-house motor manufacturers to supply motors to meet the safety, quality and performance requirements on-time and in budget
Manage staged design reviews to company procedures
Define the mechanical, electrical and validation requirements
Liaise with other functions to ensure System level compliance
Deploy relevant design, development and problem solving tools to achieve ‘Right First Time’ solutions
Maintain the motor requirements flow-down, compliance matrices, dFMEAs, etc.

What we are looking for

Essential:
Educated to engineering degree standard
Good project management and communication skills
Appreciation of motor design with a good knowledge of manufacturing technologies
Flexibility to adapt in an exciting fast paced working environment
Willingness to travel

Desirable:
Experience in high volume manufacture of electric motors
Strong understanding of electric motor design
